In the Seattle area, a group called Community Loaves has rallied nearly 900 home bakers across Washington, Oregon, California, and Idaho to donate fresh, whole-grain loaves and cookies to food pantries when their supply is low. Since they started in 2020, the bakers have given more than 200,000 loaves and 220,000 cookies to families in need. The bakers, who range from high school teenagers to retired elderly folks, help food banks keep their doors open while they fight cuts to federal food aid and rising grocery bills. Community Loaves ensures bakers follow approved recipes and delivery schedules so their gifts are safe, nutritious, and welcomed by food banks. Their work shows how community action can fill gaps during hard times and bring warmth, connection, and sustenance to people who need it most.
