Hearing Restoration Breakthrough

A groundbreaking gene therapy trial has restored hearing for those born with congenital deafness caused by mutations in the OTOF gene. Participants consisted of 10 children and young adults, and all 10 of them had their hearing restored. The treatment involved a single injection into the inner ear, delivering a working copy of the gene needed for hearing. Within six months, participants showed dramatic improvements, with some going from profound deafness to holding conversations. The youngest children responded especially well, with one 7-year-old regaining nearly full hearing just four months after treatment. With no serious side effects reported, researchers are calling this a major leap forward—and a hopeful sign for future treatments targeting other forms of genetic hearing loss.
