Dutch children have once again topped UNICEF’s global well-being rankings— which evaluates happiness across 43 countries based on mental and physical health, life satisfaction, and academic skills. In the Netherlands, kids enjoy a rare sense of freedom: they’re encouraged to roam, ride bikes, and play outdoors independently from a young age. This autonomy is backed by a strong social safety net that includes universal healthcare, generous childcare benefits, and flexible work policies for parents. The result is high levels of life satisfaction, strong mental and physical health, and a deep sense of confidence and connection among young people. Between 2018 and 2022, 87% of fifteen-year-olds in the Netherlands reported being satisfied with their lives—which is the highest rate among all countries studied. The findings highlight that trust, autonomy, and community support don’t just improve moods—they shape flourishing childhoods.
