New Jersey has officially made a significant leap toward early childhood education access by enacting legislation for free preschool and full-day kindergarten. Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill into law that secures annual state grants for expanding preschool to all 3 and 4-year-olds in districts currently lacking programs. This legislation builds on a nearly $600 million increase in preschool funding over the past seven years and has enabled 229 additional NJ districts to join the free preschool movement. The new law also commits the state to provide universal, no-cost full-day kindergarten for every district by the 2029–2030 school year. State leaders celebrated the milestone, noting that this proactive investment prevents opportunity gaps before they start and strengthens the foundation for children’s lifelong learning.
