Fire departments in California have a surprising tool at their disposal: goats. Goats are helping firefighters create fire breaks by eating grass and dry brush around populated areas. Fire breaks are critical in wildfire prevention because they stop fires from spreading deep into communities. The goats can chew through areas of land that are difficult for firefighters and mowers to reach on foot. Both the goats and firefighters benefit from the partnership— the goats are full of food and the fire department has an environmentally-friendly fire break to rely on. In Sacramento, there’s a “West Sac Goats” Facebook page for people to track down the location of the adorable, lifesaving goats.
