Country music legend Dolly Parton was recently awarded the title of Kentucky Colonel, which is the highest civil honor in the state. Governor Andy Beshear gave Parton the award in recognition for her work improving children’s literacy in Kentucky through via the Imagination Library. Through Parton's Imagination Library, children have access to new books from infancy through their early education years, helping to start a love of reading at a young age. Parton’s father grew up in poverty and never learned how to read, inspiring her to start Imagination Library to ensure no other child faces the same challenges. Since she started the organization, Parton has given away over 250,000 books to over 3 million children around the world. Kentucky Colonel awards are only given to those who are dedicated to serving the community and have displayed goodwill and kindness, making Parton the ideal candidate for the role.
