A Bay Area artist is turning a devastating brain cancer diagnosis into a powerful tribute to the people who helped him through it. After being diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, former Pixar visual effects artist Vincent Serritella underwent surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy before returning to his studio with a new purpose. He began painting portraits of the doctors, nurses, family members, friends, and neighbors who supported him during his treatment, with plans to create 41 portraits in total. Serritella says the project grew out of a deep sense of gratitude for the care he received and a desire to focus on the people who matter most. The series has become both a creative outlet and a celebration of human connection, highlighting the impact that compassion, community, and support can have during life's most difficult moments.
