When 43-year-old Jenny Nguyen decided to use her life savings to open a bar in Portland, Oregon, she wasn’t sure how successful it would be. Much to her surprise, the bar’s reception has been better than she could have dreamed. The Sports Bra, a sports bar that only plays women’s sports games, brought in almost $1 million in revenue in its first year. Nguyen was inspired to open The Sports Bra after feeling frustrated trying to find a bar where she could watch women’s professional sports games. She wanted to create a safe space for women to watch sports, make friends, and enjoy the camaraderie of being a fan. The Sports Bra is the first bar of its kind in the United States, but hopefully not the last.
