Wildlife Rescue Saving Raccoons
A wildlife rescue center in Mississippi is giving orphaned baby raccoons a boot camp to prepare them for life back in the wild. At Woodside Wildlife Rescue, young raccoons that have lost their mothers spend months learning the skills they’ll need to survive independently, from climbing trees and finding food to navigating the outdoors and interacting with other raccoons. Rehabilitators gradually reduce human contact and move the animals into increasingly natural environments where they can practice foraging and develop their instincts. Once the raccoons demonstrate that they can find food, avoid danger, and care for themselves, they are released into protected areas away from busy roads. The rescue takes in hundreds of injured and orphaned wild animals each year, and its raccoon program offers a second chance to animals that otherwise might not have survived on their own.
