Wild Cat Species Discovered
Scientists have discovered a new species of wild cat in Bolivia, marking the first time in more than a century that a new living feline species has been formally identified. Known as the tilcayo, the small, spotted cat lives in the Yungas cloud forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes and weighs around three pounds. The discovery began after a local resident found one of the animals wandering outside, mistook it as a lost kitten, and brought it to a wildlife sanctuary. Staff were unable to identify the cat, and researchers soon noticed that its distinctive markings and features differed from other known species. That mystery sparked years of genetic research, with DNA analysis ultimately confirming that the tilcayo is its own distinct species that diverged from related wild cats around 1.4 million years ago. Scientists now hope to learn more about its population, behavior, and habitat, while the discovery demonstrates just how much biodiversity remains to be uncovered and protected.
