Inmates Give Back to Schools
A group of incarcerated men in Kansas is giving back to its community by helping families struggling with unpaid school meal balances. Nearly 30 men at Norton Correctional Facility, all members of the rehabilitation program Reaching Out From Within, organized a fundraiser after learning that Norton Community Schools had accumulated about $6,000 in unpaid breakfast and lunch debt from families facing food insecurity. The men contributed money from their own personal funds, covering about over 70% of the district’s outstanding balance. Several participants told school superintendent Corey Roy that they had experienced hunger and financial instability themselves while growing up, motivating them to help children facing similar circumstances. The initiative not only provided meaningful relief for local families but also gave participants an opportunity to make a positive impact beyond the prison walls and strengthen their connection to the community.
