An extraordinary underwater sculpture called Ocean Gaia has been installed off the coast of Tokunoshima Island in Japan, waiting to be reclaimed by fish, coral, and other marine life. The 18-foot wide and 80,000 pound statue depicts a serene, reclining figure inspired by Gaia, the ancient symbol of Earth and life, and was intentionally designed with perforations so that it can become a living habitat and artificial reef to protect marine life. The piece serves as a symbol of renewal and the connection between humans and the ocean, encouraging people to care for the waters that sustain us. Ocean Gaia is expected to gradually become home to dozens of species, offering a beautiful, hopeful destination for marine life seeking safety.
