Scientists at the startup InventWood have developed a remarkable new material called Superwood, which is engineered from natural timber and up to ten times stronger than steel. The process of creating Superwood involves chemically treating wood to remove weakening elements, then compressing the remaining structure, resulting in a dense, fire-resistant, insect-proof material that retains the appearance of wood. Compared to steel, Superwood is more durable, lighter, and has a lower carbon footprint. Initially targeted for external building uses like siding and decking, engineers envision structural beams and even whole buildings made of Superwood in years ahead. While the construction industry is traditionally cautious about new materials, Superwood’s launch signals a turning point—and suggests that sustainable, high-performance building materials may soon move from labs to real-world applications.Â
