Challenging Heights, a Ghanaian charity founded by James Kofi Annan, operates a safe house near Accra, providing refuge and rehabilitation for children rescued from forced labor, particularly in sectors like fishing, farming, and mining. Annan is a former child slave himself, and has dedicated his life to preventing children from enduring that trauma. At the safe house, children receive comprehensive care including medical treatment, education, and counseling. Dedicated caregivers help restore a sense of family and normalcy in their lives. Challenging Heights has rescued over 1,800 children since its founding in 2012. The organization collaborates with local authorities to conduct rescue missions, and once they are rehabilitated, children are either reunited with their families or placed in alternative safe environments. The organization's efforts address the root causes of child trafficking, such as poverty and deception by traffickers, aiming to break the cycle of exploitation and provide a hopeful future for these children.
