Rhino Population Increases

Nearly 40 years after rhinos went extinct in Uganda due to poaching and conflict, the Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch—a former cattle farm—has become a shining example of successful conservation. Launched in 2005, the sanctuary began with just six southern white rhinos sourced from Kenya and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Through dedicated breeding, protection by around 78 rangers, and community collaboration, the rhino population has now almost reached 50, with five new calves born in just the past three months. This resurgence not only revitalizes Uganda’s wild heritage, but also marks the only place in the country where rhinos roam free in their natural environment. Thanks to determination, partnership, and hope, Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch’s is making wildlife recovery a reality.
