New Malaria Treatment for Infants

A major breakthrough in global health is offering new hope for the world’s most vulnerable patients, as the first malaria treatment specifically designed for newborns and young infants has been approved for wider use. The drug, known as Coartem Baby, is the first of its kind to be tailored for babies. Previously, infants were treated with medications made for older children, increasing the risk of incorrect dosing and harmful side effects. Coartem Baby is easy to administer, with dissolvable, flavored tablets that can be mixed with liquids like breast milk. Malaria remains one of the deadliest diseases for young children, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, and infants under six months were often overlooked in treatment options before the development of Coartem Baby. By creating a safe, effective solution specifically for this age group, child mortality rates will decrease as life-saving care becomes more accessible.
