A new study presented at the Psychedelic Science 2025 conference shows that a single dose of psilocybin, the active ingredient in "magic mushrooms," paired with about 11 hours of therapy, can relieve major depression for at least five years in many patients. In a small trial of 24 people, about two-thirds remained in remission five years later, suggesting long-lasting benefits that appear much quicker than conventional antidepressants. The treatment works faster too, with most participants experiencing breakthroughs within weeks. Researchers believe the psychedelic experience helps jump-start deeper psychological healing. This study could signal a major shift in mental health care—a one-time, guided therapy session with lasting, life-changing effects.
