Can you tell me about your mission?
The Harmony Project brings together people of different faiths, different ethnicities, different backgrounds, different abilities, and different beliefs, all using art as a catalyst for change. We combat disinformation, shatter stereotypes, expand cultural knowledge, and create empathy, inspiring individuals to challenge their own biases. Our goal is to build a more connected community by breaking down social barriers, bridging community divides, and empowering the voices of the people through arts, education, and volunteer service.
What do your arts programs entail?
The Harmony Project has the nation’s largest community chorus. With no barriers to entry, members participate in weekly rehearsals and volunteer community service. They perform in theaters around the country and reach hundreds of thousands more through social media. Our prison arts program includes music, book clubs, and writing workshops, creating opportunities for incarcerated men and women to practice reflection and develop community. It’s about connection, dignity, and preparation for re-entry into society. Our student program strengthens English language skills for ESL students and allows kids to explore the world beyond their own backyards. The program requires strong attendance, academic growth, good behavior, self-discipline, and accountability. Adults with disabilities in our programs are challenged to contribute, to grow, and to demonstrate ability in all its forms. They write, sing, and act, proving that talent, collaboration, and creativity know no limits.
How about your volunteer work?
At Harmony, you don’t have to sing to serve. From painting schools to stocking shelves, from cleaning neighborhoods to working with students, incarcerated neighbors or adults with disabilities, Harmony volunteers practice service in tangible, measurable ways. It’s about rolling up sleeves, building relationships, and taking responsibility for the well-being of others. Every person has a role in practicing harmony. Working together, we are achieving the mission of a stronger and more inclusive community.
What kind of productions do you work on?
Harmony reaches thousands of guests each year with high-energy productions that have garnered local, regional, and national audiences. Harmony Sessions is an innovative series featuring local performing artists who engage the audience as a collaborative partner in embracing differences. We provide music and entertainment for major corporations and organizations who seek to create impactful programs for their colleagues, customers, and constituents. We also work with Emmy Award-winning local video and film producers to produce works that bring to light the voices of populations that are often left in the shadows.
