A new report by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund announced that access to drinking water and water sanitation have improved considerably over the past twenty years. The research found that 2.1 billion people have gained access to safe drinking water in the last two decades, and access to safe sanitation has doubled. Additionally, now 75% of the world’s population has access to basic hygiene, which ultimately affects water quality. Although the report is a great sign of hope, the United Nations cautions that access to drinking water still has to increase sixfold for the world to reach universal access.
