23-year-old Melanie Salazar and her 88-year-old grandfather Rene Neira shared a special bonding experience recently: college graduation. The two students earned their degrees from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Grandpa Rene got his degree in economics and Melanie studied communications. Rene had been interested in studying economic development from a young age and participated in rallies and civil advocacy work despite not being able to attend school. If graduating at 88 wasn’t impressive enough, Rene has also been fighting a terminal illness while studying. Congratulations to Melanie and Rene!
