In 1984, the unincorporated town of Idyllwild, California held their first ever election. In lieu of political candidates, however, the ballot was full of pets competing for the mayoral position to raise money for the local animal shelter. A golden retriever named Max won the election, starting a town tradition of having golden retriever mayors. Max I was in office until 2013, when he sadly passed from cancer and Max II took over. Max III is the current reigning mayor, and his three sibling golden retrievers serve as his deputy, security, and vice mayor. Over the past several decades, Idyllwild’s various golden mayors have served as local celebrities who make appearances at schools, hospitals, nursing homes, town events, and make residents smile.
