At 94 years old, John Bennett is being celebrated for an extraordinary milestone: 80 years of bell-ringing. Bennett first began ringing church bells in 1946 at age 14 after deciding to “have a go,” and what started as a teenage hobby quickly became a lifelong passion. Now serving as tower captain at St Mary Magdalene Church in Gedney, Lincolnshire, he still helps care for the bells and mentors fellow ringers decades later. Over the years, Bennett has rung bells for major historic moments including the coronations of both Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III, and has even practiced the tradition internationally in places like the US and Africa. Friends, family, and former students recently surprised him with a celebration honoring his dedication, with many crediting him for teaching generations of bell-ringers and inspiring others through his enthusiasm and longevity. Bennett says the activity keeps both his mind and body active, and despite reaching his 94th birthday, he has no plans to stop anytime soon.
