The World Architecture Festival’s pick for the 2023 Building of the Year award is a Chinese boarding school in Ningo, Zhejiang called Huizhen High School. The building’s indoor-outdoor approach includes a rooftop park, treehouses, a floating forest walkway, and open air lecture halls. The campus was designed with a focus on stress release, allowing students to think freely in and out of the classroom. Huizhen High School’s motto is to let students “waste time mindfully” in its airy, serene environment. The winner of the coveted award is selected by a panel of 140 design and architecture experts, and they say Huizhen High School was chosen for breaking conventional school design norms and focusing on the student experience.
