Endurance swimmer and UN ocean advocate Lewis Pugh became the first person to swim around Martha’s Vineyard, completing a 60-mile journey over 12 days in near-freezing waters—all to raise awareness about shark conservation. Facing rough seas, cold temperatures, and migrating sharks, Pugh pushed through the extreme conditions with minimal gear, driven by a mission to shift public perception of sharks, especially as the 50th anniversary of Jaws approaches. Finishing near the iconic lighthouse where the film was shot, he called for peace with sharks instead of fear, reminding us that these misunderstood creatures are vital to ocean health. His swim is an example of how one person’s determination can spotlight urgent environmental issues and inspire change.
