Last month, a lung cancer patient in the Kashgar region of western China underwent surgery to remove a tumor in their lungs. The surgeon, however, wasn’t in the room with the patient, and was actually 3,100 miles away in Shanghai. Dr. Luo Qingquan successfully completed the surgery remotely by using a 5G surgical robot. Dr. Qingquan has been a key contributor to robotic surgical research, and is one of the first surgeons to utilize the technology. He controlled the surgical robot from a console station at the Shanghai Chest Hospital, where he could watch the robot’s actions in Kashgar on several monitors. The robot's nimble arms completely removed the cancerous tumor in only an hour. The success of the operation shows how robotic technology can affect medical treatments, as patients now may not have to travel long distances to receive treatments from experts.
