Students who are chronically ill and unable to attend school in-person now have a new tool at their disposal to stay connected to their peers. The AV1 robot was designed to take a sick child’s place in the classroom and has a camera, microphone, and speaker, allowing it to serve as the student’s eyes, ears, and voice. Teachers place the small robot on a desk, and the device is controlled remotely by the student via an app. Students can turn the robot around to see different parts of the room, raise their hand to answer questions, and can talk to friends and teachers through the robot’s built-in speaker. Students experiencing medical difficulties often fall behind socially as much as they do academically, and the AV1 robot gives them the opportunity to still be part of the school community as they recover from illness. The AV1 has started to be used in schools in the UK and is available to rent for $200 per month or can be purchased for $4,960.
