In Kasese District, Uganda, a women-led reforestation initiative is tackling flooding and erosion caused by changing rainfall patterns and deforestation. Janet Nyakairu Abwoli has been organizing workshops to teach women how to plant and care for indigenous trees, like Ficus and Dracaena, which help prevent erosion, retain soil moisture, and offer benefits like fodder and medicine. These trees also hold cultural significance, bringing the community closer together. While some areas have seen success, there are still challenges like limited resources and seedling failures. Abwoli’s efforts are really making a difference in both the environment and local traditions—and giving women a stronger voice in the process.
