12-year-old Aubrey Sauvie may have been born with no hands, but she hasn’t let the disability hold her back from pursuing her musical dreams. Sauvie has been interested in drumming for years and taught herself to play by holding drumsticks in the creases of her elbow. Although her method was innovative, it wasn’t a perfect system and she frequently would lose her grip on the drumsticks and drop them. Suavie’s music teacher reached out to Tennessee Tech University’s Tech Engineering for Kids program, and their students created 3D-printed hands that Sauvie can use to play drums. Tennessee Tech students worked with Sauvie to customize the prosthetics to her needs, and the gift has allowed Sauvie to maintain control of the drumsticks and drastically improve her skills.
