Military Dog Reunited with Handler

In 2019, U.S. Army Sergeant Payton May formed an unbreakable bond with Yyacob, a Belgian Malinois, during their explosives detection and patrol training. For nine months, the pair was inseparable, even sharing a twin-sized bed while deployed in Iraq. When May was reassigned to San Antonio nine months later, the two were tragically separated. This year, May heard that Yyacob was retiring after eight years of military service and sprang into action to reunite with his beloved partner. American Humane reconnected the long lost friends in an emotional reunion, with Yyacob leaping into May’s arms the moment he saw him. Now adopted by May, Yyacob is set to enjoy a well-deserved, joyful retirement alongside his lifelong companion. May is set to deploy to Italy this spring, and Yyacob will accompany him—not as a service member this time, but as his cherished pet.
