Can you tell me about the need for your work?
Foster Love makes the foster care experience better for the hundreds of thousands of children going through it. There are over 430,000 children in foster care and only 214,421 licensed foster parents. This means foster parents and agencies are often left with limited resources. Over 300,000 children in foster care struggle with challenges like PTSD, homelessness, and educational disadvantages. We address these needs by providing essential resources, such as replacing trash bags with personalized duffle bags filled with necessities, reuniting siblings separated in the system at Disneyland, and bringing emergency resources with our Rapid Response Program.
What are Disney Days?
In the foster care system, more than 70% of siblings are placed in separate homes. This leaves brothers and sisters disconnected during some of the most difficult months or years of their lives. These sibling relationships are often the longest and most stable family connections foster youth have. Disney Days exists to restore that lost connection, and is the largest reunification event in the country. Our sibling reunification event provides a safe, supportive environment where foster siblings are reunited to strengthen family bonds and remind every child that they are not alone. We’ve reunited over 3,200 siblings, giving them the opportunity to share laughs, make memories, and spend meaningful time together.
What are some of the items you provide kids?
When foster children move around, they are usually given two trash bags to carry their belongings in. To combat this, we have volunteers decorate, stuff, and donate Sweet Cases, which are duffle bags stuffed with a teddy bear, a blanket, a hygiene kit, a coloring book, and crayons. The Birthday Box brings joy to kids by showing them they are cherished and remembered, while also equipping them with celebration essentials. From banners to balloons, candles to confetti, it has everything you need to throw a memorable party. Plus, it includes a gift card for a special sweet treat. The Superhero Box is more than just a costume– it’s a way to show foster youth they are superheroes. Packed with a mask and cape, power cuffs, superhero tattoos, a pillowcase, a bracelet, and drawing materials.
What other support do you offer?
We support foster youth who are aging out of care with access to education and career training, and offer scholarships for those continuing to pursue education. We also have a private shop where foster youth can choose their outfits to build confidence and personal style. There are tons of foster care resources available to families on our website. Prospective foster parents can learn about what it takes to open a child into your home, and current foster parents can use our adoption cost calculator to plan their adoption journey.
