Can you tell me about the inspiration behind Guitars for Vets?

Guitars for Vets began in 2007 when guitar instructor Patrick Nettesheim met Dan VanBuskirk, a Vietnam-era Marine struggling with the emotional effects of his military service. As Dan began learning to play guitar, he discovered that music offered more than just a new hobby— it provided an outlet for his emotions, a sense of accomplishment, and an opportunity to reconnect with himself. Recognizing the impact these lessons could have on other veterans, Patrick and Dan began bringing guitar instruction to patients at a Veterans Affairs medical center in Milwaukee. What started as a simple connection between two people has grown into a nationwide nonprofit that has since reached 15,000 veterans with our programs.

What do your programs entail?

Our program provides veterans with 10 weeks of free, one-on-one guitar lessons taught by volunteer instructors. Each lesson is tailored to the individual's interests, abilities, and needs, allowing participants to learn at their own pace in a supportive environment. Upon completing the program, veterans receive a new guitar and accessory kit so they can continue playing and developing their skills. Many of our chapters organize group sessions where veterans can play music together, build friendships, and connect with others who understand their experiences. Our goal is to create a lasting community that extends well beyond the initial lessons.

Why is music such a powerful tool for veterans experiencing PTSD?

For many veterans, transitioning back to civilian life can come with significant emotional and physical challenges. Music offers a creative outlet that doesn't require putting difficult experiences into words. Learning to play guitar can provide a sense of focus, accomplishment, and control while helping reduce feelings of stress and isolation. Research involving our participants has shown improvements in symptoms associated with PTSD and depression. Beyond those benefits, music creates opportunities for connection. Whether it's mastering a new chord, playing a favorite song, or sharing music with fellow veterans, these experiences can help restore confidence, build relationships, and bring joy into everyday life.

How can people get involved and support your mission?

There are many ways to help us bring the healing power of music to more veterans! Musicians can volunteer as instructors at local chapters, while others can assist with fundraising, community events, and spreading awareness about our programs. We also accept financial contributions and guitar and equipment donations, which help us provide lessons and instruments free of charge. As demand for our programs continues to grow, community support is essential to reaching more veterans. Whether you're donating, sharing your musical talents, or helping introduce someone to our mission, every contribution can make a difference.
