A new “elephant ambulance” is giving injured elephants a safer path to recovery, and it recently completed its very first rescue mission in India. The specialized vehicle, developed by the conservation group Wildlife SOS, was designed to transport elephants long distances while allowing veterinarians to monitor their health along the way. Its inaugural patient was Veer, a 27-year-old elephant who was suffering from a painful leg injury. After receiving initial treatment from a veterinary team in rural Uttar Pradesh, Veer was carefully loaded into the ambulance, which includes support harnesses to reduce pressure on injured limbs and access points for medical care to reach the animal during transit. Following a multi-day journey with regular stops so he could rest, Veer safely arrived at the Elephant Hospital at the Wildlife SOS Conservation and Care Center in Mathura, where he will receive ongoing treatment, proper nutrition, and a protected environment to heal. The elephant ambulance is a tool to conserve and protect the species and shows how innovative tools can improve the wellbeing of animals in need.
