Horse Detective Reunites Mustangs

There is a historic debate when it comes to the freedom of wild mustangs to occupy federal lands. Animal activists advocate for the horses’ ability to run free, but ranchers complain of damage to their grazing fields. The Bureau of Land Management collects tens of thousands of mustangs each year, separating families and selling them at auctions to unqualified homes. Clare Staples is passionate about the plight of mustangs, and decided to give up her career as a producer to start a nonprofit that saves mustangs from dangerous environments and reunites them with their families. Skydog Ranch and Sanctuary rescues mustangs from kill pens, negligent owners, and auctions, and brings them to large, safe ranches in Oregon and California. The 59-year-old has become a horse detective of sorts— she researches their markings, personalities, and history to bring separated horse families together. She reunited a mother with her twin foals, reconnected sibling mustangs, and brought together nine members of a horse family that had been trapped and separated. There are currently 260 wild horses under Staples’ care, and she hopes to bring in more and more animals each year.
