Designers have unveiled a new “fully biodegradable” shoe called the O°, aiming to eliminate footwear waste altogether. Rather than using plastics, petrochemicals, or glues, they’ve crafted the shoe entirely from PHAs, which are organic materials produced by bacteria that feed on carbon dioxide, methane, or food waste. The design features a knitted PHA yarn base, with outer layers 3D-printed onto it, and even the dyes are bacteria-derived. The creators say the goal is for the shoe to return harmlessly to the earth after use, minimizing harm in its production and nourishing the environment in its afterlife. The company behind it is now seeking partners and investors to scale production and bring the technology, and similar biodegradable textiles, to market.
