Chefs Helping Immigrants

In Los Angeles, a wave of community compassion is blossoming in response to heightened immigration enforcement. Chef Danielle Duran Zecca of Amiga Amore began personally delivering comforting home-cooked meals—like steak tortas, breakfast burritos, and shrimp spaghetti—to immigrants too fearful to leave their homes. Working with the nonprofit No Us Without You, she now reaches dozens of families every other Sunday, creating a lifeline of nourishment and care. Across the region, others are answering the call too: restaurants in Boyle Heights are packing produce and pantry staples for discreet delivery, a bartender turned her bar into a food donation hub, and a grocer in the Central Valley now makes up to 55 safe grocery deliveries a day—just visible enough for recipients to feel secure. These efforts underline how food and fellowship can shine light and hope in the face of fear.
