“Call A Boomer” Project

A creative new initiative is tackling loneliness by connecting two of the most isolated age groups— young people and seniors— through simple, real-time conversations. The “Call a Boomer” project installs brightly colored payphones in public spaces that instantly connect younger callers with older adults in far-away locations, sparking spontaneous, cross-generational chats. The phones have been installed in high-foot-traffic public spaces across several European cities, as well as in senior living facilities in the United States. The project shows that meaningful human connection can improve well-being, with early participants reporting feeling uplifted and understood after just a single conversation. By turning a nostalgic piece of technology into a tool for connection, the initiative is helping bridge generational divides and offering a hopeful, low-tech solution to a growing global loneliness crisis.
