Bhutan Helps Stray Dogs

The Kingdom of Bhutan is the first country in the world to achieve 100% sterilization and vaccination for street dogs. Bhutan partnered with Humane Society International over the past several years to target the country’s stray dog issue. The goal was to use compassion in lieu of sheltering and euthanasia to create a peaceful coexistence between the people of Bhutan and street dogs. Through targeted spay/neuter programs, vaccines, microchipping, and community engagement to stop mass sheltering, the dogs of Bhutan are now safer and healthier than ever. Prime Minister Tshering of Bhutan hopes that his country’s successful program will inspire other nations to protect dogs worldwide.
