African Tree Planting Project

The organization Trees for the Future, otherwise known as TREES, is taking on a mass reforestation program in Africa. TREES is working with farmers to replace barren cash crops with biodiverse forests that feed families, restore the soil, and expand the tree cover. The map of TREES’ initiative is seven times the size of Manhattan and will include planting a billion trees by 2030. The forests TREES is installing have a protective outer layer of strong trees, clusters of agroforestry trees that can be used for firewood, and gardens full of fruits and vegetables. Their expansive plan will reverse decades of deforestation, create hundreds of thousands of local jobs, and alleviate issues caused by climate change.
