The world’s largest suspension bridge, which will connect Sicily with mainland Italy, is set to begin construction by the end of the year. Italians have been advocating for a bridge that reaches across the Messina Strait for decades, as travel between Sicily and the mainland is currently reliant on ferry schedules. The proposed design for the Messina Strait Bridge will be a rail and road bridge that spans 1.8 miles. The Messina Strait Bridge will allow for easier transport of goods from the mainland, which will greatly improve commerce on the island as it becomes more accessible to the masses. The ambitious engineering project will cost over $4.5 billion dollars to construct and is expected to take five years to complete, but Sicilians will reap many benefits once the bridge finally opens.
