Bookloop is a new second-hand buy-back book scheme that is being used in the UK as a sustainable alternative to Amazon when it comes to getting books. With Bookloop, readers can trade copies of books they no longer need for a different used book, or for an online credit to purchase a book. Books can be dropped off at collection points or picked up from their own home. Bookloop sells the used books through an online marketplace that only works with independent bookstores. The program has created a community of readers who enjoy the comfort of a physical book while also wanting to prioritize sustainability. Bookloop wants to ensure authors are included in this process as well, and royalties accumulated from second-hand book sales are redistributed to the writers in a shared author fund. By reusing books and lessening waste, the books get to have longer life cycles as they move from home to home.
