The Hamilton Art Gallery in Australia hosted a surprise exhibition titled “Hello Hamish,” showcasing the work of Hamish Elsmann, a 42-year-old man living with autism and schizoaffective disorder. Over the years, Hamish frequently visited the local gallery and library, often playing the piano and leaving behind his sketches. Without his knowledge, the gallery staff had been saving his drawings— more than 250 in total. Hamish recently walked into the gallery to find his own artwork displayed on the walls and was invited to play the piano in the exhibit space. The community showed up in support of Hamish’s creativity, and the surprise was deeply moving for the artist and his family. The exhibition has given Hamish a newfound sense of confidence and pride in his work, and he’s inspired to continue using art as a way to make a difference in society.
