In light of the recent devastating floods in Texas, we are spotlighting an organization that has deployed various search and rescue missions to help those affected. TEXSAR is a volunteer-run disaster response team that provides additional support to federal, state, and local operations. Learn more about their live-saving work here!

How is TEXSAR assisting with the recent floods?

TEXSAR, otherwise known as Texas Search and Rescue, has deployed assets to Kerr County and beyond. We have dozens of volunteers on the ground, swiftwater teams, boats, drones, K9s, and are able to assist with anything the government agencies need of us. The work is hard on our team and their equipment, but they continue to expand their reach, navigating deep floods, debris fields, and dangerous terrain. If you are able to support our mission, please donate at our website. Because of the generosity of our donors and sponsors, we are able to provide our services free of charge.

What kind of work does TEXSAR do?

TEXSAR has teams in Central Texas, Houston, Galveston, Dallas, and the Coastal Bend. We deploy at the request of the Governor of Texas or other government agencies and provide specialized services for disaster relief. We have ground search and rescue operations, flood rescues, K9 searches, aerial searches, and UAV support. We are in a constant state of readiness— all of our volunteers are certified by state and federal standards, have extensive field experience, and go above and beyond the call of duty.

Can you tell me about your volunteers?

We currently have 346 active personnel, 178 wilderness technicians, 52 flood and swiftwater technicians, 44 medical professionals, 22 K9s, 21 UAS pilots, 15 rescue boats, and tons of equipment. Our members dedicate themselves year-round to training and deploying throughout the state. Last year, our volunteers travelled over 750,000 miles and dedicated over 55,000 hours to 126 deployments. Our size allows us to encompass a wide variety of search, rescue, and disaster management strategies.

How can individuals get involved in your work?

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and are brought together by a common purpose: to serve our community by providing search and rescue. TEXSAR is always looking for new volunteers to join the team. We are the largest wildland search and rescue organization in Texas, and we continue to provide high quality service. Our searchers are held to the highest of standards so that they are ready when the next call comes. We have roles available for incident management, consulting experience, field deployment, and more. If you are ready to join, you can view the requirements and apply online.
