Can you tell me about the need for your work?

Lighthouse for the Blind is a social enterprise providing employment, support, and training opportunities for people who are blind, DeafBlind, and blind with other disabilities. Our goal is to empower these individuals through sustainable jobs and transformative services for independence and career advancement. We ensure employees are provided with whatever supports are necessary for success in the workplace, including sign language interpreting, mobility instructors, and adaptive equipment.

What kind of employment do you offer?

We currently employ over 480 individuals, more than 270 of whom are blind, DeafBlind, or blind with other disabilities. Lighthouse employees make aerospace parts, office products, and a myriad of other machined products. We also provide managed services like appointment setting, quality assurance, account reconciliation, contract close out, and other administrative services. Additionally, we operate 15 AbilityOne Base Supply Centers that offer easy customer access to Lighthouse products, direct feedback and communication with customers, and employment opportunities.

What other support do you provide?

Outside of employment, we offer a range of services for employees who are blind and DeafBlind, including computer training, braille courses, elementary education programs, and community bonding programs. We offer daily living skills training in the home, technology training, and independent living services. Behind the Seattle Lighthouse, we have a garden designed for people who are blind that has fragrant plants that appeal to the sense of smell and touch, serving as a relaxing reprieve for employees. We also have a guide dog support fund to help guide dog assisted employees build more independence into their work and personal lives.

How can individuals get involved?

The generosity of our community allows us to meet people where they are in their journey of vision loss. Our donors provide the necessary support, funding the services critical for navigating the intricacies of work and life. Simply put, our donors and partners ensure our employees are poised for success. Volunteer opportunities range from biography writing to photography to being a sighted guide and more, you can learn more on our website.
