Climate Group develops programs and policies that help organizations and governments around the world become more sustainable. They work across industries to show that climate change is an issue everyone can work on, and that it needs our immediate attention in order for us to reach net zero emissions. What is your mission?
Our goal is a world of net zero carbon emission by 2050, which leads to greater prosperity for all. We focus on systems with the highest emissions and where governments and businesses have the greatest opportunity to drive change, including energy, transportation, construction, and manufacturing. We challenge organizations to make commitments and hold them accountable to their promises, sharing what we achieve along the way to show other organizations what they are capable of doing.
Can you tell me about your key areas of work?
Energy is the largest polluting sector globally, and we are working with leading businesses, cities, and governments to accelerate the shift to cleaner, smarter energy sources by showcasing the benefits and pushing for ambitious policies. Transportation is a significant contributor to climate change, and electric transport offers a major solution in cutting emissions and pollution. Climate Group is creating powerful coalitions that scale this transition, generating powerful demand signals for market acceleration. We believe every net zero conversation must begin with energy efficiency in buildings, and we push for cities to transition to LED technology for street lighting and revolutionize the way they design public buildings by limiting the use of concrete and steel.
What is on your Global To-Do List?
As a society we can achieve big results in a year, but on climate we’re still not moving fast enough. The Climate Decade is now— we must cut global emissions in half by 2030 to mitigate rising temperatures worldwide. We’ve developed a Global To-Do List of seven ambitious actions that can deliver the speed of results we need. The list includes supporting workers to power down coal, unleashing renewable energy, banning the relining of coal-based steel furnaces, getting serious about reducing methane, paying attention to energy efficiency in buildings, buying clean power sources, and taxing oil and gas companies to fund our transition to a greener future.
How is Climate Group making food sustainable?
The world’s food system accounts for about a third of global emissions and a third of global energy consumption. We are working with corporations and governments to target a range of issues within the global food supply chain, particularly in shifting demands and diets. In the Peruvian Amazon, we introduced sustainable agriculture and livestock practices that regenerate forests and contribute to economic development. In Brazil and Mexico, we have created policies to reduce emissions from the agriculture sector and pivot funding to conservation and restoration of land. Reducing the emissions intensity of food is critical to achieving our goal of a net zero world.
