Tilos, a small Greek island, has installed a circular recycling system in lieu of a landfill. The transition has reduced waste on the 750-person island by 86%. The initiative is called Just Go Zero, and Tilos is hoping that their impressive results will inspire other Greek islands to follow suit. The system recycles plastic, metal, glass, and paper and turns all biodegradable waste into soil. Every person on the island was given bags to separate their recyclable materials to help streamline the process. For waste like electronics and clothing, Tilos residents can drop off items at an upcycle center where it can be reused by someone else. The lack of waste is noticeable on the 24-square mile island, where residents and tourists alike can now enjoy clean beaches and eco-friendly living.
