Giant Tortoise Returns to Galápagos

A major conservation milestone has been achieved in the Galápagos Islands, where 158 giant endangered tortoises were released into the wild on Santa Cruz Island, where the species had previously been extinct for 180 years. These majestic tortoises were carefully tended to at the Charles Darwin Research Station before being returned to their ancestral habitat, where they can now graze, reproduce, and help restore the island’s ecosystems. Scientists, conservationists, and local communities have been advocating for decades for this reintroduction, which is anticipated to greatly reverse biodiversity loss in the region.
